missjunebug is a fervent supporter of oneacrefund.org, the NGO ElderJB and his lovely bride work for. Their motto: Farmers First! If you’d like to read about the work of One Acre Fund, check out the book by Roger Turow entitled The Hunger Season which tells the story of the NGO’s work in Kenya. That work has been expanded way beyond Kenyan borders to include Rwanda, Burundi, and new pilot projects in other East African countries as well.

Which brings missjunebug to this nifty announcement by One Acre Fund she received in her email today. Check it out:

SUPPORT ONE ACRE FUND WHILE SHOPPING AT AMAZON.COM

When you make your Amazon purchases through AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5 percent of the price of eligible purchases to your preferred charitable organization, at no additional cost to you. Support our farm families just by shopping for the items you already want to buy!

missjunebug is a huge fan of Amazon.com for purchasing just about everything and now she can help out her fave a hand-up, not a hand-out organization: One Acre Fund.  Doubtless, a double good win-win for missjunebug and the awesome farmers of East Africa!

Woo to the hoo x 10!

mjbTip: Try smile.amazon.com and donate to your fave organization! If you use Google Chrome you can even download a one-click button that will take you directly to AmazonSmile to make your everyday Amazon purchases. That .5% will add up quickly with your help!

Speculoos is Spectacular!

Cookie Magic! Photo by mjb2013

Every once in a while missjunebug comes across a product that is absolut! blog worthy. Like Consumer Reports, she receives no special consideration or payment for her endorsement. missjunebug is an ad-free zone! She shares this information for the sheer joy of hoping others will enjoy the product as joyfully as she has enjoyed it! Too many joys?? Not in this case! Speculoos is a taste bud-altering experience, unlike any missjunebug has ever had. Imagine delicious cookies, mildly spicey shortbread cookies. Imagine those cookies smashed to bits. Imagine those smashed bits being spun into a creamy, silky, buttery, sweet, caramel-ly spread. Imagine dipping a spoon into said spread and slathering it on, what else? another cookie! Ahhhh. Spectacular Speculoos! If no other cookies are available just enjoy straight off the spoon.

Your taste buds will be forever grateful as missjunebug is to ElderJB for introducing the junebug family to Speculoos during the Christmas holidays. He wends his way through Brussels, Belgium on his trip from Rwanda to the Hacienda in SoCali and always does a little airport shopping. While missjunebug appreciates the awesome Belgium chocolates ElderJB lavishes upon the junebug fam, she’s just wild about the new find: Speculoos! Thanks, ElderJB for this smashed-up cookie spread madness!

If you are not traveling to Brussels in the near future you can track down Trader Joe’s version of Speculoos descriptively named Speculoos Cookie Butter. missjunebug doubts it is as good as Lotus Original Speculoos but it might run a close second, and it is available a lot closer to home! Sadly, missjunebug will probably have to settle for TJ’s version because her jar of LOS is profoundly empty.

Alas...the jar is empty! Photo by mjb2013

missjunebug has been looking through her fab iPhoto collections recently and decided to put together a little photo essay of her Amazing Animal Finds in Africa! Mr.JB and missjunebug had the good fortune to travel to Uganda and Rwanda (with a day trip to to the lava flows of  the Democratic Republic of Congo) and view the zoo animals of their childhood on the animals’ home turf. What an experience!

Trip of a Lifetime

Perhaps you’ve noticed that missjunebug flew away for a little while. Pretty far away actually. All the way to Africa to visit her ElderJB. Believe her blog title when she says it was the trip of a lifetime. This much she knows is true:

Her ElderJB and his spectacular (svelte, sublime, super-gorgeous) MG are making history in the hinterlands of Rwanda helping farmers TUBURA their harvests and improve their lives.

TUBURA (oneacrefund.org in Rwanda) staff is dedicated, optimistic, hard-working, and forward-thinking, a powerful force for good in the Nyamasheke district.

The enthusiasm and energy and pure exuberance of the local Rwandan staff brought tears to missjunebug’s little bug eyes as they celebrated success and acknowledged the hard work of the field reps and the farmers in their care.

missjunebug was blown away by the sheer enormity of the undertaking her ElderJB has taken on in this most remote of places on the planet (at least to her!) and further blown away by the 2020 target: one meeeeellion farmers (to borrow a phrase!) Are you kidding, ElderJB? missjunebug knows how large you live when you are around the Hacienda but your plan to live large in the hinterlands of Rwanda is truly awesome.

missjunebug’s motherly advice to ElderJB and the superb MG? Go for it! If anybody can do it, you two and your incomparable staff of young, strong, savvy Americans and aspiring, inspiring Rwandans can do it!!

Here’s a little photo-essay missjunebug style:
